Overview of implementing organ transplant techniques at provincial hospitals
Organizing simultaneous organ harvesting and transplantation at provincial medical facilities is a complex medical technique requiring synchronized coordination and high professional expertise. On April 6, 2026, the Vietnam – Sweden Hospital in Uong Bi (Quang Ninh) marked an important milestone by successfully performing its first multi-organ harvesting and transplantation simultaneously at the facility from a brain-dead donor. This achievement provides a practical model of specialized medical organization capacity at the grassroots level.
Diagnosis and consultation for evaluating organ donors
According to clinical reports, the organ donor was a 26-year-old male patient admitted to the hospital with a traumatic brain injury from a traffic accident. Despite intensive resuscitation measures, there were no signs of recovery. The hospital conducted professional evaluation steps and confirmed the state of brain death in strict accordance with legal and medical professional procedures. Upon receiving consent for organ donation from the family, the hospital activated the protocol for tissue and organ procurement and coordination.

Inter-hospital coordination and organ procurement process
Surgical preparations were carried out urgently through online and in-person consultation systems with Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, Central Eye Hospital, and the National Coordination Center for Human Organ Transplantation. The collaboration of nearly 100 medical staff helped the organ procurement surgery succeed in about 5 hours. The harvested organs included the heart, liver, two kidneys, and two corneas. The tissue and organ preservation process strictly followed medical standards before being safely transported to central-level organ transplant centers.
Performing kidney transplant technique directly at the procurement facility
Notably, the two harvested kidneys were allocated to be transplanted directly at the hospital for a 19-year-old male patient. The recipient had a history of brain hemorrhage and was diagnosed with end-stage chronic kidney disease, accompanied by hypertension, requiring cyclic hemodialysis three times a week since July 2025. Performing the transplantation directly at the procurement site helps optimize cold ischemia time, increases graft survival rates, and minimizes complication risks for the recipient.
Development orientation and humanitarian values
Mastering multi-organ harvesting and transplant techniques helps provincial hospitals reduce the burden on higher-level facilities while bringing life opportunities to many local patients with end-stage organ failure. The success of the surgery not only affirms the specialized medical capacity of Quang Ninh province but also honors the noble gesture of the donor’s family, contributing to spreading a profound humanitarian message of sharing within the medical community and society.
